The Supreme Court nominee will be Latina
The news that George W. Bush is near the end of his search to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor has the speculation running as wild as the disinformation from the White House Press Office. If you recall the red herrings leaked before Judge John Roberts was named in Bush's trademark "fuck you" to the press, it's absolutely assured that - once again - the nominee will come completely from left field. Except for those of you reading this. Wall Street Journal columnist Manuel Miranda writes today that "If Ruth Bader Ginsburg could replace Byron White, Janice Rogers Brown can replace Sandra Day O'Connor." Her name, high on the list of potential nominees, comes as a result of being a conservative African-American woman and a "two-fer" (or "three-fer" if you include "conservative"). The thinking on this is correct, but they're absolutely wrong on the potential nominees. The nominee will not be an African-American. Bush has Clarence Thomas on the bench and will look instead to pay back an important constituency by appointing a "Hispanic." No, it won't be Alberto Gonzalez. In fact, the nominee will not be - like Gonzalez - of Mexican-American descent. Bush will finally reward the Cuban-American community of Florida who assisted in stealing the 2000 election for him. He will placate their impatience for his not ousting Castro or assassinating Hugo Chavez by appointing a Cuban-American woman. This is certain. My first thought was that it would be Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who would also satisfy his conservative Christian constituency, by virtue of her sponsoring the "Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act." Never mind that she's never served as a judge, Bush famously puts unqualified persons in important positions of power. But then I came across another more probable nominee: Judge Marilyn Milian, a Cuban-American who is on "The People's Court" tv show and was appointed by the President's brother, Gov. Jeb Bush, to the 11th Circuit Court in 1999 (which includes Dade County). She is young and will occupy the bench for 30-40 years, keeping W's legacy alive for a long time. Part of the Bush legacy is making sure that Jeb is viable as a Governor that can be re-elected and set on a historic dynasty in the White House. This can only happen with the Cuban-American constituency. Judge Milian will be the best choice to make this happen. This is my prediction...
